Mega Homebrew Update!

XMB Lock

This is useful for people who share access to their PS3’s.  XMB lock gives you the ability to lock the XMB and system settings of the console.  Meaning no-one can format, update or otherwise change your PS3 without your knowledge.  If you have younger siblings who also use you console then this is for you.

PSN Patch

Currently PSN Patch is at version 4.70.07.  Giving users of 4.70 PS3’s full access to all network features such as PSN and the store.  The latest version has extra stealth features that are also invaluable if you wish to avoid being banned.

XMB Mod Manager

Latest version is working on CFW 4.70 with no problems.  Some of the features now easily available with this PKG include the ability to change the start up graphics and sound as well as modify the background wave however you like.

More homebrew releases coming up.

Hopefully soon we should be launching a complete hombrew archive containing all the classic stuff with many past versions.  We a re just waiting for our new hosting to go live before transferring over all the data.  Its a little under a terabyte in size and we have had to check out the legalities of hosting such material.  If you remember a lot of the early stuff was created using the leaked (stolen in Sony’s eyes) software development kit.  A little later of course PSlight emerged and this no longer became a problem.  But even so ever release has to be carefully checked for copyrighted material before it can be made available.  Once the archive is ready to go public we will post the link here on the blog and also on our twitter.  Membership will be open to all PS3 users running custom firmware only at the start while we see how things work out.  Stay tuned for more on that.

So what of a jailbreak for 4.70+?  Things might seem a little slow on the mainstream PS3 new sites but rest assured there are a

few things bubbling under on IRC which should be seeing alpha or even beta releases soon.  Its well known that many of the old names from the PS3 scene have either retired or simply plain disappeared.    Although with the talent level of some of the groups currently working on a new exploit it is suspected that some old members may be back under different assumed names.  Probably idle gossip but who care if we have this muh talent still working on the good old PS3.

The PS4 scene on the other hand has been very quiet recently with a few false starts a month or so ago but nothing since.  Is this because the PS4 is truly a locked down system from the start where the PS3 may still have a few holes left to find.  What do you think PS4 un-hackable?  Let us know what you think in the comments bellow.

News of a PS4 jailbreak – confirmed

It is not maybe an experience that is for all gamers.    There is a dedicated number of gamers for who it very facinating when some clever tech head manages to jailbreak a latest.    When the PS3 was released a lot was made of the consoles resitance to being hacked but this all went out of the window once a simple method was made public.   The simplicity of the hack that came meant that a lot of people found themselves hacking their consoles just for the fun of it.

Now we’ve had the PS4 for a few months one thing that seems to pop up on almost a daily basis is if anyone has so far managed to jailbreak the Playstation 4? Now some people have said that it is flat out impossible to jailbreak the Playstation 4 as there is simply no way for a person to do this.   Whether true or not there are already some talk of a working jailbreak for the PS4.  In most cases these turn out to be nothing but elaborate hoaxes.    Now let’s say that not all people who want to jailbreak a console do so with the intent to run pirated software.   The majority of jailbreakers of course are only interested in playing the latest games for free on their consoles.

Even at this early stage it does seem that any PS4 hack that does come out will not be as simple to execute as the one for the PS4.  But of course that could change over night.    Sony are simply crazy to think that someone will not figure out a somewhat simple solution to get into the Playstation 4 and mess around with is insides.   The future of the PS4 looks to be another interesting chapter in the console hacking story.  What will be Sony response this time and what measures do they already have in place to combat this.

September 2013 – Situation update.

We now have two hardware choices and one software choice when it comes to backing up PS3 games.  In one corner there’s the ODE’s.  Optical Drive emulators.  These clever little devices sit between the PS3’s Blueray drive and its main board allowing you to connect an external hard disk by USB.  All this is transparent to the console itself.  Well maybe not transparent, but more on that later.  So you simply keep your PS3 updated with the latest OFW as its released but still enjoy your game backups from disk.

Sounds great and I was about to purchase one myself when I thought Id try to find a little more information that is usually shown by the shops.

Firstly how risky is this method?  Well as the 3k3y is apparently made by the same people who did the xk3y for the Xbox360 maybe that’s a good place to start.  It turns out that not long after the xk3y was released a way was found in the next update to detect it and thousands of people got permanent bans for their consoles.  Just Google it for yourself.  So are we about to see the same thing happen on the PS3?

Well no-one but Sony can answer that problem.  What we do no is both the latest ps3 jailbreak and Sony’s PS3 OFW are on 4.46 and have been for some time now.  This fact combined with the impending launch of the PS4 have many people convinced that that the next update will coincide with the new consoles launch.  We are sure to see some updates to SEN around that time so a possible large incremental update is highly likely depending on what cross talk there may be between the two consoles of course.

So what does that mean for the Cobra ODE and the 3K3y now they are out there in the wild is yet to be seen.  What is for certain that any of the early adopters that managed to get around the stock shortages and actually have one running will the the first to find out.

 

LV0 keys confirmed as real

Despite the fact that you have been under a rock somewhere recently you will of course have heard of the latest PS3 hack. The latest PS3 hack sees the release of what are called the lvl0 keys or bootloader keys. Whatever updates Sony throw at the console in the coming months cam now be decoded and their secrets exposed. This is big news in the scene once again with it hitting mainstream news and tech sites all over the web. As time goes by we are getting more snippits of information on how this leak happened the behind the scenes dealings that have been going on recently show the PS3 scene in a very poor light a situation that hasnt changed from the Christmas that Fail0verflow and Geohot dominated the CCC conference. Actually an inner circle of elite PS3 devs had the keys but were never going to make them publicly available. For once maybe the scene is grateful to some unknown Chinese hackers who actually had bad intentions for the scene. By stealing the keys from an encrypted server they hoped to cash in. It would seem these hackers were going to release a new branch of the CFW for the PS3. They once more had plans to lock it with their own DRM protection and make people pay for the Custom Firmware updates. This spurred the original developers to release all the keys they held publicly and for free on pastebin to stop the release of the DRM protected CFW. From one angle the timing of this release to Christmas and the launch of the Super Slim PS3 could be good news with an influx of new customers for Sony.

The really best thing of course to result from this is that in future it will likely be a fairly easy little case for you to patch newer firmwares. Find the log on code so that access to PSN/SEN can not be blocked by means of an update! So we can look forward to updated CFW for quite some time to come. With many probably incorrectly predicting that this is the final win in the ongoing PS3 hacking cat and mouse game that started way back in august of 2010. Remember we have been here before with Fail0verflow predicting the console was wide open. This could also be bad news for many of the PS3 Mod Chip suppliers out there as the free download spreads to every PS3 forum.

Jailbreak for a 4.25 PS3 is released meaning new CFW for 2012

PS3 Jailbreak 4.25 – New Custom Firmware Released.

Recently there have been rumors of another leak of security keys for the PS3.  These rumors seem to have been confirmed with what looks like the release of a 4.25 CFW more commonly known as PS3 Jailbreak 4.25.  With the Custom Firmware revision version now matching the official firmware version for the PS3 custom firmware consoles can once again access the PSN/SEN.   Meaning once more backups can be loaded and played online using the official PlaystationNetwork and not the dev network that many had been using.  Hopefully the ability to run backups will not bring with it the influx of cheaters to the online gaming environment that we saw last time.  So if this is you hear the plea of the playstation community and leave your cheating tools and bots offline.  Cheating in games online will once more bring the wrath of Sony down on all of us once again.

That said its great news for the genuine homebrew users as you can still have your PS3 Jailbreak for retro gaming through emulators and at the same time play the latest PS3 releases online.  More information can be found Here

Just a look back

The PS3 has had a long history when it comes to jail-breaking. There have been numerous attempts to get a working PS3 Jailbreak. BlueRay Java was the first possibility of an exploit. Java on the blueray was too limited and only a small buffer overflow was found. By then the otheros feature has been added by Sony to enable Linux on the console The great this about Linux was the ability to probe the PS3 system and firmware. Geohot made the first progress with his memory glitching method for accessing the hypervisor. News hit us that OFW 3.21 would remove otheros! What was first thought to be a bad april fools joke turned out to be real with the removal of otheros All hope seemed to be lost and the scene was getting much quieter again. Geohot claims he is leaving the scene due to getting the blame for the loss of other os.

With very little fan fare a single video appeared on you tube showing a new PS3 Jailbreak dongle. News of this spread like wildfire. The jaded scene called fake on the video at first. Quickly it became obvious that the dongle and backup manager were genuine. Even at over 100 dollars all stores received many pre orders. Due to the massive demand many who pre ordered had to wait months. The key problem was fixed with firmware 3.56 released quickly by Sony Only approved USB devices could not be connected to the PS3. This simple move stopped the dongle dead in its tracks. The upside was that every game released to then would be playable from USB. PSN always required the latest firmware version to connect. And so it was fine for a while but with the Christmas releases getting nearer the future was uncertain. The first release to cause real problems was GT5 It required firmware 3.50 to run and this means no dongles could work.

It wasn’t until nearly Christmas that a way was found to play it on CFW. By the end of December failoverflow had shown the Key Fail to the world Over the next few days new of the consoles security fail was widespread. New Years day sees the hello world app by geohot being released Then in a move that angered sony he released his jailbreak. By patching the key system it meant the ps3 could run homebrew and go online as well. Backups were difficult but possible with this jailbreak. One infamous CFW from Wanikoto caused many bricks but most went for the Keamw release.

This was the golden age with full PSN access for CFW users. Suddenly cheating was a real problem with online games for the PS3 Meanwhile Sony were working behind the scenes to change things. During this time a hacker quietly gained access to the PSN account server. Credit card details were stolen from a possible 50 million users. PSN was quickly shut down when news broke of the hack. Sony took nearly two months to get PSN back online When it returned the added security meant no more PSN for CFW users. Some people moved to the so called Dev Network for the online gaming. The next releases of games need the new updated firmware.

A split occurs in the scene between the homebrew and ‘backups’ crew which divides the scene until a new dongle was released by true blue. Special DRM in the dongle meant you had to run specific versions of the game. Eboots that were being released by paradox. A little later duplex started releasing PSN games having somehow cracked the newer keys. How trueblue were decrypting newer games remained a mystery for a while, then out of the blue someone leaked the 3.60 private public keys! This definitely marked another rise in activity on the ps3 scene. Obviously Duplex didnt like the built in DRM of the TB dongle and started to try to crack it. Very quickly they started releasing many of the TB eboots to work on any CFW. Promises were made by TB manufacturers of a dongle update and newer games so far no updates from them have been made Is this the end of the trueblue dongle? Of course also at this time many people missed the news they could convert to a debug console. this means running homebrew and backups without the need for the keys at all. Or course the drawback of the ps3 dex unit is it will never be able to access psn. For PSN access and game backups there is only really one option Firmware 4.21 needs to be jailbroken. This would mean access to all the latest game releases with the ability to play them online. Full access must also include to the Store and being able to download and buy things is a must.

Top 25 PS3 Games

I just watched this video I dont know what you think but i would disagree with most of the top 25 ps3 games listed here.  Flower is nice but top 25? maybe maybe not Ill let that one slip.  Demon souls is much better than street fighter at 21.  Great to see super stardust in there at 19 personally id make it higher, same goes for wipeout hd while neither of them might be ground breakingly new ideas they both show cased the ps3 brilliantly and would get you the wow factor when showing someone the ps3.  But i guess there so many games that came after that its going to be difficult to fit them all in.  Resistance fall of man of course in there and so is warhawk.  Oh god Rock Band at 12 come on who like that game?  The monster that was Modern Warfare 2 is there at number 10 and id bet theres many in the ps3 gaming community that would place it much higher than that and maybe even at number 1.  Maybe not but its still a huge game.  At number 8 theres Bio Shock which is great I was starting to get worried there they would omit what I still think is one of the most atmospheric games ever released.  Great game shame bioshock 2 was a little disappointing.  On to Killzone 2 at number 7 with Uncharted Drakes Fortune at number 6.  Both great of cource Uncharted has since been overshaddowed by Uncharted 2 but thats since this video at a guess.   Fallout 3 I just found strange so I would agree with Grand Theft Auto being higher up.  Still playing that now, what two years later or something!  So top 3 is (or was then) Little Big Planet at 3 and Nates back at 2 with uncharted 2 so I take back everything I said!  So the number 1 PS3 game is left to be Metal Gear Solid 4 and who can argue with that.

DUPLEX Crack TrueBlue Dongle!

Great news for the people who have been against the TruBlue Dongle for the PS3.  The much hated dongle existed with the one intention of piracy and they unknown people behind it had gone to the lengths of implementing a form of DRM inside the dongle itself!  Wrong on so many levels is what many people thought.  But now out of the Blue (geddit?) Duplex have once more come to the rescue of the ailing PS3 scene and cracked the damn thing.  So now their eboots will work without actually having the dongle.  Admittedly there are still few games that were unplayable anyway but this releases up the remaining few.

Rogero CFW proof of concept

With the release of the 3.60 keys for the PS3 longtime dev Rogero has release a proof of concept for implementing the newer keys in existing custom firmwares.
More news will follow on this but at this time it is only capable of running games on 3.56 keys.
